Slavery, at least in its large-scale industrial form as part of a colonial project, is considered something from another era. In After the Silence, Brazilian filmmaker and theater director Christiane Jatahy connects this idea to the present day, exploring its impact on the contemporary world and its geopolitical realities. Through the play, she addresses how the history of slavery continues to affect the lives of many millions of inhabitants of this planet, uprooted by history.
Three women narrate this haunting fiction in the context of their community's struggle for land, freedom and identity. After the Silence is developed around the story of Torto Arado (2019), Itamar Vieira Junior's acclaimed novel, set in a rural context in the interior of Bahia

“Slavery, colonialism, racism, such is the triptych on which the social structure of Brazil is based. Yesterday as today. Christiane Jatahy does not make theater to amuse the audience. Her theater is there to burst the abscess. Don't stick to the official versions we teach in school. After the silence, speaks again to repair the gaps of memory. Words, body, music, literature and cinema. These are the ingredients of Jatahy's cauldron theater.”

“The director, playwright and filmmaker Christiane Jatahy, dialogues in After the Silence, with different levels of storytelling, between fiction and reporting, theater and images.
Inspired by the novel Torto Arado by Bahian geographer Itamar Vieira and the documentary Man Marked for Death by filmmaker Eduardo Coutinho, the show immerses us in a dizzying abundance of stories through the voices of three sisters.”
