Breaking the waves de Missy Mazzoli

* Programme subject to change

Set in a remote religious community in Scotland in the 1970s, this piece tells the intense and moving story of Bess McNeill, a naïve and devout young woman whose faith is tested after the tragic accident of her husband Jan, an oil rig worker. Paralyzed, Jan asks Bess to have relations with other men and tell him about the encounters as a way to maintain their emotional bond. Convinced that her devotion can heal Jan, Bess descends into a spiral of extreme sacrifice, challenging the moral and religious norms that surround her.

Breaking the waves explores the limits of love, faith, and female autonomy. The music, imagined as a male choral hymn, highlights the tension between the divine and the human.
