UNAM Carro de Comedias, created in 1998 by the Dirección de Teatro, is a traveling project that brings contemporary adaptations of classic texts to schools, plazas, and public spaces throughout the country. Its mission is to expand access to theater while serving as a training and professional development platform for young graduates.

For its 30th production, they present Ubú Rey (Ubu Roi). 130 years after its premiere, Alfred Jarry’s play remains relevant as it satirizes power and its excesses. Father Ubú, driven by Mother Ubú’s ambition, murders Wenceslas, King of Poland, and usurps the throne. Now as King Ubú, he imposes a violent, absurd, and tyrannical regime based on fear, arbitrary taxes, and corruption, while the people are subjugated and all opposition eliminated.

Resistance emerges in Prince Bugrelao, the sole survivor and legitimate heir, who leads a rebellion to restore order. Will Ubú cling to power, or will he finally be overthrown?
