After being interested for some years in creating a ballet about Copelia, a character also known as “The Girl with Enamel Eyes”, Jean-Christophe Maillot completed his version of this classic work in 2019. In accordance with the times of technological innovation we are going through, the winner of the prestigious Benois de la Danse prize in 2008 decided to update the narrative to turn it into a story of two sweethearts whose love will be challenged by the appearance of a robot with artificial intelligence.
Maillot has been creating ballets for forty years, during which time he has never ceased to marvel at the bodies of the dancers, at their aesthetics. It is with this constantly renewed joy that he expresses himself through them to tell the story of Coppél-I.A.

PRESS QUOTES
"If Coppelia lacked a human soul to be one of us, in this version of Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, it is the love she receives from Frantz that ignites that hidden part of her laboratory self, which not even her maker knew existed. She becomes aware of herself and knows she is ready to fly, giving us one of the great finales of recent ballet."
Opera World.
“The dance is beautiful: Maillot knows exactly the movements he will highlight (...) Berrtand Maillot (...) revisited Delibes' music in a cinematographic way”.
Le Figaro.
"Coppél-A.I., humanoid with a tender heart. Jean-Christophe Maillot returns to a narrative vein in which he excels."
