The Alhóndiga de Granaditas Esplanade is the most vibrant stage of the Cervantino, as it stays active throughout the whole Festival. Its wide plaza is perfect for the presentation of massive stage shows and every day it comes alive with each performance.

Originally, it was a place built to store grain, but it soon became a symbol of freedom. Let's go back to one of the most important events in the fight for the Independence of Mexico: the taking of the Alhóndiga, in which the insurgents, a group made up of miners and peasants, managed to defeat the Spanish, an act that fueled the fire of Independence.

However, to be recognized as a symbol of freedom, this site had to witness both glorious and tragic events. In the Alhóndiga, peninsulars and their families were also slaughtered; subsequently, the heads of the insurgent leaders Miguel Hidalgo, Ignacio Allende, Juan Aldama and José Mariano Jiménez hung on the corners of the Alhóndiga for ten years.

The Festival gives us the opportunity to give new meanings to this venue and broaden its historical significance by making the Alhóndiga a place where we can all meet and enjoy the arts.
