Orquesta Moderna

Mexico

Rosino Serrano presents Orquesta Moderna, a large-scale big band that brings together some of the most outstanding musicians in the national jazz scene in a project that redefines the language of the genre from a deeply Mexican and Latin American perspective. A multiple Latin Grammy nominee and recognized as one of the most important arrangers on the Mexican music scene, Serrano creates a space where jazz tradition engages with new sounds, colors, and musical roots.

The program for this gala features pieces from his two most recent albums: Alma, centered on Serrano’s original compositions, and Coalescencia, a collaboration that explores works for piano and big band through the lens of Alex Mercado. It is complemented by arrangements and compositions inspired by great figures of Mexican jazz such as Enrique Nery and Eugenio Toussaint, as well as new interpretations of Mexican song classics by composers such as Armando Manzanero and Consuelo Velázquez.

For this occasion, the group will feature prominent guest soloists with international careers: Italian harmonica player Gianluca Littera, pianist Alex Mercado, vocalist Iraida Noriega, guitarist Francisco Lelo de Larrea, and vihuelist Fernando De Santiago.

‘... Jazz has the stigma of being sophisticated, complicated, and difficult to listen to, but it can be a lot of fun, and you have to get to know it to appreciate it.’
