The public will be able to appreciate the beauty of Kagura, a type of art that combines dance and theater. It is one of Japan's oldest expressions, with roots dating back to the 17th century, when it emerged as a ritual to express gratitude to the Japanese gods. The origin of this ritual is found in an 8th century Japanese myth.
In Hiroshima, a new version of Kagura emerged to express feelings of freedom in wartime; after World War II, its interpretation took a drastic change as it began to use themes from other traditional Japanese performing arts such as Noh and Kabuki, becoming a new traditional peace art form. Hiroshima Kagura will present Tsuchigumo, a story about the beginning of the unification of Japan, and Yamata no Orochi, a piece about the fearsome demon Mountain Snake. Today, artists keep this tradition alive to thank the gods of nature, and to represent Japanese history and mythology through performance art.
