
José Luis Castillo
He began his musical studies in Spain and continued them in Salzburg, Luxembourg and Paris with Alexander Müllenbach and Manuel Galduf, maestros with whom he studied analysis, composition and conducting respectively; specializing in the repertoire composed from the second half of the 20th century. He has lived in México since 1997. He was artistic director of the academic program of musical improvement Instrumenta Oaxaca, Contemporary Music cycle coordinator of the Festival Internacional Cervantino, composition professor at the Institute of Culture of Guanajuato, artistic director of the Symphony Orchestra at the University of Guanajuato, artistic director of the Chamber Orchestra of Fine Arts and musical director of the Camerata de las Américas.
More than seventy orchestras in twenty-five countries and a discography of fifteen titles ratifies Castillo's career. In addition to opera, ballet, chamber and symphonic repertoire, he has an extensive catalog of silent films with live music, more than 200 world premieres and hundreds of premieres in México, as well as countless first auditions in Latin America of some of the leading composers of the 20th and 21st centuries.
As a composer, his works have been performed in contemporary music venues and festivals in several countries. Castillo is currently considered one of the main promoters of contemporary music in México. He is the critical editor of the works by Silvestre Revueltas in collaboration with Roberto Kolb. He is a composition professor at Escuela Superior de Música del INBAL, artistic director of Centro de Experimentación y Producción de Música Contemporánea (Cepromusic) and musical director of its ensemble.
