He is a Cuban pianist and composer whose work as an author and performer includes different genres and styles from traditional to popular music; from jazz music to classical chamber music. 

Among all of his works done for over sixty movies, one of the most remarkable ones was the work he made for Fresa y chocolate, a film nominated for the 1994 Academy Awards. His work has been awarded by Venice International Festival and La Habana International Film Festival, among others. As an author and songwriter, he has made over 30 records, his album Salmo de las América was nominated for the Latino Grammy and it won the award for the best record of the year in Cuba. He was granted the National Cultural Distintion, Alejo Carpentier medal and la Félix Varela Order, this last being one of the most important awards for musicians in Cuba.
