Renato Zupo

Saxophonist, composer and arranger of music for symphonic bands, with master's degrees in modern harmony and education, he is the main director of the Sonora State Symphonic Band.

Born in the city of Hermosillo, Sonora, he comes from a musical dynasty, he began his studies in tenor saxophone at the age of 10 and in his adolescence he was part of the Sonora State Band as a clarinetist to later join the saxophone row. Being part of this group at an early age led him to dedicate himself fully to this profession by taking clarinet, saxophone, piano, jazz and symphonic band direction classes. In 2009 he was appointed assistant director of the Banda de Música del Gobierno del Estado de Sonora. In March 2019 he was appointed main director of the group giving it a relevant turn, achieving a different sonority and promoting a variety of symphonic repertoires, some performed for the first time in the group. In January 2020, during the inauguration of the Alfonso Ortiz Tirado International Festival, the name change from Banda de Música del Estado to Banda Sinfónica del Estado de Sonora was made official. Maestro Renato Zupo is the author of the suite Cuadros de un paisaje sonorense and the piece Sunset. These pieces were recorded by the Banda Sinfónica del Estado de Sonora in July 2021. He also orchestrated the hymn of the Colegio de Bachilleres de Sonora and is currently specializing in research and rescue of Sonoran music to keep preserving the musical legacy of the state. He has directed outstanding international soloists, as guest director he has conducted La Banda de Música del Estado de Oaxaca, among other groups, and as main director he has conducted La Orquesta Juvenil Sinfónica de Sonora and the Sonora Big Band Jazz orchestra.

He is currently a teacher in the extracurricular area at Colegio de Bachilleres de Sonora in the Nuevo Hermosillo and Guillermo Careaga campuses.

In March 2023, and due to his trajectory and excellent work, he was invited to direct the Banda Nacional de Conciertos de Cuba, becoming the first director from Sonora belonging to an ensemble of the state to direct at an international level. During the same visit he participated as a cultural ambassador to strengthen ties between Cuba and Mexico.
