This group makes a synthesis of Mixtec music and presents a proposal that unites extremes: the rural with the urban, the ancient with the contemporary, the local with the global. Pasatono Orchestra has dedicated more than twenty-five years to researching and performing the music of Oaxaca. Its name pays tribute to the way in which the old Mixtec musicians called the fretboard of the violin or bass, and seeks to continue the use of emblematic instruments of the region that are in danger of disappearing. Under the direction of the composer and interpreter of the bajo quinto (Fifth bass), Rubén Luengas, this band has sung to sadness as well as to love.

PRESS QUOTES
“After a decade as a trio, Luengas thought it was time to recreate the fabulous orchestras that the old men told them about, and so, in 2008, they invited other musicians to form the ensemble with strings, horns and percussion, in the style of the old Mixtec groups.”
