Compañía Nacional de Teatro
Misantropías by Héctor Mendoza
Mexico
Misantropías is a tribute to the playwright Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, better known as Molière, and to the lives of theater people. The play unfolds across different planes of reality. On one level, it follows the theater company of Alceste (Molière), a playwright and director of immense talent, who is nevertheless unable to navigate a world full of hypocrisy.
His theater company is in crisis: they are facing a lawsuit that could cost them the loss of theater and, with it, everything. His actors, Filinto and Celimena, suggest negotiating with a powerful patron who knows nothing of beauty; however, Alceste is incapable of engaging with mediocrity. At the same time, romantic entanglements within the company further complicate matters.
In another realm of reality, Juan (Alceste) talks with Magdalena, his closest confidante, who has recently stepped away from the theater. In their conversations, they reflect on the actor’s craft, human nature, and love. As the play progresses, the boundaries between fiction and reality begin to blur.
