It is a dance down a rabbit hole: nationality, identity, racism, body image, culture, death, love, ancestor worship, veneration, innocence and experience, sexuality and shame, defiance, humiliation and awakening. From 1970s Ireland to the present day, How to Be a Dancer in Seventy-Two Thousand Simple Lessons crosses the boundaries between what is lived and what is imagined, between history and destiny, between fact and fiction.

Written and choreographed by Michael Keegan-Dolan, who performs on stage for the first time in over twenty years, alongside dancer and lifelong collaborator Rachel Poirier.

Every Night & every Morn

Some to Misery are Born

Every Morn and every Night

Some are Born to sweet delight

Some are Born to sweet delight

Some are Born to Endless Night

Cada noche y cada mañana

Algunos para la miseria nacen

Cada mañana y cada noche

Algunos nacen para el dulce deleite

Algunos nacen para el dulce deleite

Algunos nacen para la noche eterna

"This is a kind of autobiography told in dance and words. Written by Michael Keegan-Dolan, we trace a childhood in north Dublin with four brothers and five sisters; a period of training to become a professional ballet dancer in London; and time spent dancing in West End musicals before being struck by a stage object."

Katy Hayes, Irish Independent.

"Michael Keegan-Dolan certainly knows how to talk about the body. In an elegant bridge between the physical and the narrative, his new How to Be a Dancer in Seventy-Two Thousand Simple Lessons encapsulates how movement can evoke fundamental memories."

Molly Longstaff. University Times.

“This coming-of-age journey of dance, text and theater is a treasure trove of great and small joys.”

Chris O’Rourke. The Arts Review
