Amat Escalante was born in 1979. He is a self-taught filmmaker from the city of Guanajuato who began his career in film at the age of 15. After making two short films, he wrote and directed his debut feature, Sangre (Blood), shot in his hometown and premiered in the Un Certain Regard Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival 2005, where it received the FIPRESCI Award from the International Critics. His second feature, Bastardos (Bastards), also premiered in the Official Selection of Un Certain Regard at Cannes 2008. Heli was his third feature film, which premiered in the Official Competition at Cannes 2013, where it won Best Director. His fourth feature, The Untamed, premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2016, where it won the Silver Lion for Best Director. From 2018 to 2021 he directed multiple episodes of the hit Netflix series Narcos: México. His fifth film, Perdidos en la noche (Lost in the Night), premiered at the Official Premiere Selection in 2023 during the Cannes Film Festival.
