
Orquesta Juvenil Universitaria Eduardo Mata
A symphonic ensemble founded in 2012, it takes its name from the renowned Mexican conductor Eduardo Mata, Principal Conductor of the OFUNAM between 1966 and 1976. Its home is the Sala Nezahualcóyotl at the Centro Cultural Universitario. Its members pursue an intense orchestral activity while complementing their training through masterclasses with guest soloists, chamber music seminars, and sectional workshops.
As part of its artistic activities, it has performed in various states of the Republic, among them Michoacán, Querétaro, Morelos, Estado de México, Guerrero, and Guanajuato. In 2015 it undertook an international tour that included its debut at the Auditorium Parco della Musica of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, as well as appearances at the Emilia Romagna Festival in Imola and the Merano Music Weeks in Italy, where it shared the stage with orchestras such as those of La Scala and the Mariinsky Theatre.
In 2019 it released its first album, El árbol de la vida, featuring works by José Pablo Moncayo, Silvestre Revueltas, and Hebert Vázquez. That same year, it performed at the headquarters of the United Nations and at the Museo del Barrio in New York.
The orchestra is currently under the baton of José Areán, a position previously held by Gustavo Rivero Weber. Over the course of its career it has worked with guest conductors such as Enrique Bátiz, Avi Ostrowsky, Massimo Quarta, Lanfranco Marcelletti, Ronald Zollman, Enrique Arturo Diemecke, Moshe Atzmon, Bojan Sudjić, and Rodrigo Macías, and has collaborated with soloists including Pascal Rogé, Roberto Díaz, Jorge Federico Osorio, Anabel de la Mora, Alexander Kniazev, Massimo Quarta, Anna Hashimoto, Manuel Ramos, Erika Dobosiewicz, Friedrich Kleinhapl, Makoto Ueno, María Tretyakova, Noé Colín, Victor Sych, Fernando de la Mora, Nikolai Khoziainov, Wonmi Kim, and Pablo Garibay.
