Ballet Folklórico de México
For over six decades, Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández has established itself as the most emblematic folk-dance company in Mexico and worldwide. Founded in 1952 by the dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernández, this ballet revolutionised the concept of traditional dances and transformed the history of Mexican dance. With its distinctive style, it set the direction and tone for thousands of ensembles both in Mexico and abroad.
Amalia Hernández conducted extensive research across the various states of the Mexican Republic, studying not only traditional dances but also music, customs, and traditional costumes. She recovered these elements to give them new meaning, recreating, staging, and promoting them in the theatre.
Today, its repertoire is a classic that is continuously renewed, transformed, and enriched over time. With more than 45 million spectators and countless accolades, Amalia Hernández’s artistic legacy remains alive among large audiences, both Mexican and international. Thanks to its more than 120 original choreographies, technical rigour, elaborate traditional costumes, and world-class performers, Ballet Folklórico de México has established itself as the finest company of its kind worldwide.
