Amalia Viviana Basanta Hernández is the daughter of Amalia Hernández and Joaquín Basanta. She began her dance training at the age of five with Ballet Folklórico de México and studied classical ballet under Nellie Happee. At thirteen, she joined Ballet Nacional de México to study contemporary dance. She also trained in modern and contemporary jazz abroad.

In 1977, she returned to Ballet Folklórico de México as a dancer, was named Principal Dancer in 1979, and later became Artistic Coordinator and Director of the company’s school.

With a career spanning over 25 years, Amalia Viviana has performed in more than four thousand shows at Palacio de Bellas Artes and has taken part in international tours. She has received awards such as the César Chávez Medal and the Artistry of Mexico.

In 2002, she founded Academia de la Danza Amalia Hernández. Her project “México en Movimiento” has remained active since 2005. Her choreographic work has crossed borders, and today she continues to lead Ballet Folklórico de México through her artistic direction and by training new talent in folkloric dance.
