
Apphia Campbell
Born in the United States, she graduated from Florida International University with a BFA in theatre performance. In 2013, her play Black Is the Colour of My Voice premiered in Shanghai and later appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2014. Since then, she has toured the UK, selling out venues such as the St. James Theatre, Wilton’s Music Hall, and Oxford Playhouse. In 2017, her show Woke, co-created with Meredith Yarbrough, won a Scotsman Fringe First Award, received an Amnesty International commendation, and was shortlisted for the Filipa Bragança Award and the Scottish Arts Club Theatre Award. In 2019, she made her West End debut with Black Is the Colour of My Voice. In 2022, this play embarked on an extensive sold-out UK tour, starring Florence Odumuso and marking Apphia Campbell’s directorial debut. In 2023, she reimagined Woke for two performers under the title Through the Mud, which premiered at the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. In 2024, Black Is the Colour of My Voice premiered in Australia, winning Best Theatre and Physical Theatre at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and continuing its tour in Sydney and Melbourne to critical acclaim.
