Africa Express
Tipo de artista: Collaboration
Acclaimed as the most revolutionary force in popular music over the past two decades, Africa Express is the globally renowned musical phenomenon that brings together artists and musicians from different cultures, generations, and genres. Each album and event is unique, filled with unforgettable moments of spontaneous collaboration.
Founded in 2006 with an initial trip to Mali that connected local stars such as Toumani Diabaté, Bassekou Kouyaté, and Amadou & Mariam with artists like co-founder Damon Albarn, Martha Wainwright, and Fatboy Slim, its first public event was a legendary five-hour concert at Glastonbury. Since then, Africa Express has organised trips to Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, South Africa, Mali, London, Liverpool, and Johannesburg, performing across the UK and Europe, from London’s Royal Festival Hall to the Roskilde Festival in Denmark.
In 2012, Africa Express filled a vintage train with one hundred artists and staged a week of concerts across the UK as part of the London 2012 Olympic Festival. Artists such as Baaba Maal, Blur, Charli XCX, Faia Younan, Femi Kuti, Flea, Franz Ferdinand, Kano, Oumou Sangaré, Paul McCartney, Paul Weller, Rachid Taha, Rokia Traoré, and Tony Allen have taken part.
Albums released under the Africa Express Presents… label include Maison des Jeunes (2013), Terry Riley’s In C Mali (2014), The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians (2016), MOLO (2019), and EGOLI (2019). Their most recent album was written and recorded in Mexico and is now available.
