Pollution Pods

* Programming subject to change

A sensory experiment that recreates air pollution from different cities around the world. Pollution Pods offers an immersive and thought-provoking experience.

Through five interconnected geodesic domes, this installation allows audiences to literally breathe the air of various global cities —from the pristine atmosphere of Tautra, Norway, to the high pollution levels of London, Beijing, São Paulo, and New Delhi.

Designed to impact the senses, each pod faithfully reproduces the air quality, scent, and temperature of its original environment. More than just a work of art, this installation is a powerful awareness-raising tool, shedding light on climate change and its invisible yet devastating effects.

Inspired by the domes of Richard Buckminster Fuller, the piece confronts viewers with the stark reality of overconsumption and environmental degradation. Visited by over thirty thousand people worldwide, Pollution Pods not only reveals the problem, but seeks to provoke real change in perception, and potentially in action, in response to the climate crisis.

Pollution Pods has been made possible thanks to the generous support of organisations such as Airlabs, Arts Council England, Build With Hubs, Cape Farewell, International Flavors & Fragrances Ltd., the Research Council of Norway, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU), and the University of East London.

“Walking through these five environments is to experience instant contrasts: from breathing the clean air of the Arctic island of Tautra to inhaling sulphur dioxide, smog, carbon monoxide, and other harmful pollutants that fill most of our major cities.”
