Sun & Sea

Beach, sand and sopranos —an opera that breaks with tradition.

Have you ever stopped to look at a beach from above? Sun & Sea (winner of the Golden Lion at the 58th Venice Biennale) is an opera-performance that merges art and environmental reflection into an innovative experience. With thirteen talented vocalists, the piece unfolds on a stage covered with twenty-five tonnes of sand, creating the atmosphere of a busy beach. While sunbathing, the characters offer the audience a series of seductive harmonies and melodic narratives. These stories range from the everyday to the sinister and the surreal, touching on trivial concerns like sunburns or holiday plans, as well as the haunting fear of looming environmental disaster arising from the fragility of human existence.

Press quotes

"Once spread out and extended, the sand forms the base of Sun & Sea, an opera-installation that won the top award at the 2019 Venice Biennale and has established itself as a masterpiece for the age of climate change. Neither didactic nor abstract, it is an insidiously enjoyable mosaic of consumption, globalization, and ecological crisis.”

Joshua Barone, The New York Times

"Rarely has an environmental message been conveyed so subtly, humorously, and revealingly in a work of art.”

Igor Toronyilalic, The Spectator

"Sun & Sea stands out for its self-awareness, for its recognition that art can connect audiences with the conflicting realities of their own behaviors, both inside the gallery and beyond.”

Igor Toronyilalic, The Spectator

“...una elegía desgarradoramente hermosa sobre nuestra relación con el planeta”.

Andrzej Lukowski, Time Out
