What can the great 13th century poet and mystic Rumi still teach us in the 21st century? We live in a society profoundly different from that of the past, and we now face radically darker questions regarding our future.
Djalaleddine Rumi (1207-1273), through his work of more than one hundred thousand verses, left us an immutable treasure that reflects a refined and luminous conception of the world. Immersing oneself in his universe and exploring his texts is a gateway to a profound thought, to a universal spirituality. It is an eternal source of passion, but also a guide that elevates the spirit, like the light that attracts and makes plants grow.
Setar virtuoso and acclaimed composer, Kiya Tabassian, was introduced to Rumi's work as a teenager and from there forged his vision of life. In this concert, he will be accompanied by the Tunisian-Belgian singer, Ghalia Benali, who is credited with defining contemporary Arab music. Together they have chosen some of Rumi's lesser-known poems to be presented to the Cervantes audience, accompanied by an ensemble of exceptional instrumentalists.

“Performances by the acclaimed Montreal-based group Constantinople are a favorite of the Museum's audiences, so don't miss your chance to hear this musical tribute to Rumi.”
Museo Aga Khan.
"Rarely has passion been so ardent as in these Rûmî Steps. The melismatic and deep voice of Tunisian Ghalia Benali has a lot to do with it... The contrast between her guttural intonations and Kiya Tabassian's rounded and softer voice works wonders. The ardor and refinement of the musicians complete the sublimation of the mystical intoxication of the love songs and other decidedly timeless laments."
Anne Berthod, Télérama.
"Combining composer Kiya Tabassian's virtuoso setar with voice, baroque violin, viola d'amore, viola da gamba, double bass and percussion, they create a new music where cultures converge. In the footsteps of Rumi showcases not only the poetic beauty of the 13th century mystic Jalaluddin Rumi, but also the impressive vocal prowess of Belgian-Tunisian singer Ghalia Benali."
