It was founded in 1992 following a deep process of research and engagement with the repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries. Its aim is to perform Baroque music with historical authenticity, using original instruments or faithful replicas, and employing the language and rhetoric of the period.

Throughout its career, the group has maintained an active artistic presence in churches, chapels, concert halls, as well as in festivals both within and beyond the state of Guanajuato. Notable appearances include Festival Internacional Cervantino, Encuentro Internacional de Música Antigua at CNA, Festival de Música Barroca y Antigua de San Luis Potosí, and other nationally renowned events.

Capella Guanajuatensis has received support from Fondo para la Cultura y las Artes del Estado de Guanajuato. In 2017, it was honoured with the Orgullo Guanajuato FIC award and received the Eugenio Trueba Olivares medal in recognition of its outstanding artistic work.
