* Programme subject to change

This adaptation of the novel 1984 by George Orwell, an essential work of dystopian literature, is a contemporary version of themes that the author had already anticipated in his writing and that remain relevant today. 1984 maintains its significance through its critique of oppression and totalitarian control. The staging, directed by Gaële Boghossian and Paulo Correia, addresses mass surveillance, the manipulation of information and the restriction of freedoms in a direct manner.

The production blends theater, visual arts, digital creation and music, using multimedia technologies to strengthen the dramaturgy and offer an immersive experience. It seeks to revive the message of the novel, underscoring the urgency of recognizing that issues of control and repression are becoming increasingly tangible in our current context.

Press quotes

1984 is a spectacular and timely work serving a committed creation. Collectif 8 offers an impressive adaptation of the masterpiece by the English writer George Orwell [...] Gaële Boghossian and Paulo Correia draw on a wide range of modern visual and sound innovations, with an impressive display of digital and special effects. These enhance the actors’ performances, immersing us in dreamlike or hallucinatory visions that align perfectly with the visionary nature of Orwell’s novel.”

A. Luccioni. La Provence

“Collectif 8 has taken Orwell’s best-known novel to offer us a kind of theatrical UFO, finely crafted by the direction, supported by a trio of exceptional actors, and playing with video and the soundtrack. We leave overwhelmed. The show is of great beauty, highly aesthetic.”

J. Pioda. LICRA

“It is fiction and yet, as we enter Orwell’s imagined future, we are shaken by an electric shock that chills us to the bone. The parallel with our society is striking, and we find ourselves as actors in this fiction that comes to life.”

Amnesty International France

“Collectif 8 never ceases to surprise us with their increasingly immersive and aesthetic creations. Their decision to adapt 1984, where the audience is literally immersed and swept into a digital and literary universe so close to current reality, leaves a profound impact.”
