Hotel Pro Forma

NeoArctic

* Programme subject to change

This visual and musical performance, created by the company Hotel Pro Forma in collaboration with the Latvian Radio Choir, received Denmark's Reumert Award. The work is set within the context of the Anthropocene, a geological era marked by the profound transformation of ecosystems caused by human activity. Through a multidisciplinary staging that combines contemporary choral music, visual art, lighting and video, it offers an aesthetic and sensorial reflection on the effects of climate change, urbanisation, digitalisation, biodiversity loss and the emergence of new technological life forms.

The structure of the piece is based on three key concepts: Grain (the mobility of materials), Vapour (the constant transformation of the states of matter) and Ray (the transfer of energy), which guide the twelve musical compositions commissioned from different artists. The piece seeks to be a symbolic journey into the “New World” of the Anthropocene, questioning our responsibility as a species and the future of the planet at a time when everything, from natural systems to social structures, is at stake.

Press quotes

“With NeoArctic, Hotel Pro Forma delivers a flawless production. The theme: the destruction of the world and climate collapse. Through visual and virtual effects, they create a stunning yet decaying universe. Featuring one of the world’s finest chamber choirs, an elite technical team and in-depth research, this is one of the most accomplished productions I have ever seen.”

“Kirsten Dehlholm, recipient of the Honorary Reumert Award, continues her legacy of pushing artistic boundaries in NeoArctic. It is a visual and melancholic requiem for the Earth and the natural world we humans have harmed. What stands out most is the music: a meeting between an amplified classical choir and electronic sounds —reverberations, underwater rumbles— that both surprise and captivate. If you enjoy experimental works, this is a genuine fusion. The music does not compete, it deepens the experience.”

“The curtain rises to reveal a scene reminiscent of a distorted nativity: 16 figures in coloured robes, red glasses and crooked staffs. They remain motionless, imposing. Then they sing, while the large screen projects striking images. Voices, images and figures merge into an intangible substance that envelops the audience for the next hour and a half.”
