Capella Guanajuatensis, Ensamble de Música Barroca

Mujeres creadoras del Barroco

* Programme subject to change

The Baroque music ensemble presents a project that reclaims the artistic legacy of historically overlooked female composers and writers. Through a carefully curated programme, FIC audiences are invited to experience the depth, virtuosity, and sensitivity of Baroque art created by women. Works by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Anna Isabella Leonarda, Barbara Strozzi, Anna Lucia Bon, and Maria Margherita Grimani, interwoven with the poetry of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, bring to life a repertoire that deserves to be heard and recognised.

Far from being exceptions, these women were key figures in their time, yet were sidelined by historical narratives that failed to do them justice. This project revives music of the highest quality and invites us to question and expand our understanding of the musical past.

Press quotes

“In this musical journey, the ensemble’s strength lies in the passion and virtuosity that distinguish the members of Capella Guanajuatensis —musicians who were also honoured with the Maestro Eugenio Trueba award as part of the Orgullo Guanajuato FIC programme.”

Instituto Estatal de la Cultura

“Through our project Mujeres creadoras del barroco, we aim to highlight for the FIC audience the value and beauty of art created by women writers and composers of the past. The absence of women in various histories of music is not due to their lack of presence in the musical life of earlier times. Rather, it is linked to the kinds of questions historians have asked, and the resulting decisions to exclude them.”
