Ultrainstinto

* Programme subject to change

The ensemble presents a concert focused on joropo llanero and genres such as pasaje and golpes, with the aim of highlighting the musical and cultural practices of the Eastern Plains as a living tradition passed down from generation to generation.

This concert promises to be a representative showcase of what takes place in the torneos and festivals of llanero folklore —spaces that have served as platforms to celebrate, preserve and promote the ancestral practices of Colombia’s diverse soundscape.

The repertoire includes compositions from their most recent album, Ultrainstinto, a project that fuses contemporary pieces with traditional forms. On stage, they use arpa llanera, cuatro, maracas, bandola, clarinet and electric bass, creating a dialogue between different modes of interpretation.

Based in Bogotá, the band focuses on instrumental music, while also incorporating vocals from four of its members and highlighting the clarinet as a central sonic element that engages in dialogue with the ensemble’s rhythms.

Press quotes

“The restlessness of four young representatives of música llanera in Bogotá led to the formation of the group Zumbao in 2015. Their recent European tour —which took them to stages in Spain, France and Belgium— has brought great news, now followed by the release of a new album titled Ultrainstinto.”

Jaime Andrés Monsalve. Radio Nacional de Colombia

“The música llanera of Colombia already has its future secured. That future is called Zumbao. With this recording, Zumbao has reached an unprecedented milestone in their musical career through a work in a state of heightened awareness, which they have titled Ultrainstinto.”

Betto Arcos. BBC Radio 3.

“A group that places emphasis on the music of the Eastern Plains as a heritage that remains alive through the practices and the re-creation of inherited traditions, which are ultimately passed down to future generations; promoting exchange and cultural dialogue through encounters and the diverse expressions of llanera culture.”
