Coordinación Nacional de Teatro commemorates the centennial of playwright Emilio Carballido’s birth with the staging of one of his most iconic comedies.
Set in Córdoba, Veracruz, in the 1950s, the play tells the story of Rocío and Aminta, two sisters trapped under the control of their brother Víctor, who has thwarted all their attempts to experience love. One day, due to a misunderstanding caused by Rocío’s hearing problems, a sentimental confusion escalates into a large-scale family entanglement, pushing the two sisters to confront their brother for the first time.
Through humor, Carballido portrays the clash between traditional family norms and the yearning for freedom in a society undergoing transformation. Inspired by the author’s real-life experiences, this piece captures with clarity and intimacy the dilemmas of an era and of a family defined by the boundaries between duty and desire.
