Following in the footsteps of Lope de Rueda—a major influence on Miguel de Cervantes— the Entremeses are characterised by their structural complexity, thematic depth, and linguistic richness. These short theatrical pieces, full of wit and satire, bring to life popular characters and everyday scenes that, with biting irony, expose the contradictions and tensions of the society of their time.
The original staging was presented for the first time in 1953 by the Teatro Universitario de Guanajuato, under the direction of Enrique Ruelas. Since then, it has become a fundamental theatrical tradition, remaining almost intact in its essence, and has given identity to the Festival Internacional Cervantino.
