Región Capital

Región Capital

This is the political, cultural, and educational heart of the state. It comprises municipalities such as Xalapa (the state capital), Coatepec, Banderilla, Emiliano Zapata, Perote, and Xico, among others, and is characterised by its temperate climate, historical legacy, and mountainous landscapes.

Xalapa, officially founded in the 16th century, developed into a commercial, cultural, and later educational hub, thanks to institutions such as Universidad Veracruzana. Over time, the Capital region has been the cradle of significant social, intellectual, and artistic movements that have shaped both the state and the country.

Indigenous, colonial, and contemporary expressions converge here. Son jarocho continues to thrive, but there is also a strong presence of classical music, theatre, contemporary dance, and visual arts. Xalapa is home to folkloric ballet ensembles, contemporary dance companies, and nationally recognised artistic groups.
