Altas Montañas Region

The Altas Montañas region of Veracruz is located in the central part of the state, within Sierra Madre Oriental, and is dominated by Pico de Orizaba, the highest point in Mexico. This region stands out for its historical, cultural, and natural richness.

Since pre-Hispanic times, it has been home to Indigenous peoples such as the Nahuas, Totonacas, and Popolucas, whose traditions, languages, and customs remain alive today. The region includes municipalities such as Orizaba, Córdoba, Huatusco, Coscomatepec, and Zongolica, among others, which together contribute to a remarkable cultural diversity. These communities preserve traditions such as the dances of the Santiagos, the Negritos, and the Voladores, as well as agricultural rituals and Día de Muertos celebrations.

Local cuisine features dishes such as tamales de elote, mole poblano, chiles rellenos, and the renowned high-altitude coffee, particularly from areas like Huatusco and Coscomatepec. Traditional music, such as son jarocho, huapango, and marimba, is also an essential part of local festivities.
