Región Huasteca Baja

Región Huasteca Baja

It is a subregion of the greater Mexican Huasteca, located in the north of the state of Veracruz. It encompasses municipalities such as Tuxpan, Tamiahua, Álamo Temapache, Cazones, Cerro Azul, and Tihuatlán, among others. This region is a mosaic of Indigenous, colonial, and Afro-mestizo legacies —shaped by rivers and coastlines, and a culture expressed in every celebration, dish, and artistic expression.

Since ancient times, Huasteca has been inhabited by Tenek (Huastec), Náhuatl, and Otomí peoples, who developed a culture rich in music, religion, and art. With the arrival of the Spanish, a process of mestizaje gave rise to new cultural forms.

Son huasteco or huapango is the soul of its artistic expression, performed with jarana, violin, and quinta huapanguera, and accompanied by improvised verses known as décimas or topadas.

Among the most representative dances are the danza de los quetzales, which symbolises connection with nature; the danza de los santiagueros, performed during patron saint festivities; and the danza de las guagas, associated with religious and agricultural rituals.
